My group created a podcast about how correctional facilities often fail to address the needs of incarcerated women, including appropriate medical healthcare—an issue, as many women are pregnant or give birth while incarcerated. These incarcerated pregnant women then face difficult circumstances, as imprisonment imposes restrictions on prenatal care, such as testing and treatment for people who have high-risk pregnancies, rehabilitative services for mothers struggling with mental illness and substance abuse, appropriate hospital arrangements for labor and delivery, healthy nutrients and diet, access to birth control and abortions, proper sanitation, and contact with the newborn.
